CV Writing - Spelling and Grammar Are Vital for the Perfect CV

In the current employment market place it is vital to ensure the look of your CV and associated documents are designed to gain the maximum exposure with potential employers.

Nowadays there is much advice available on CV writing, which can often be contradictory. Should you keep your CV to a maximum length of 2 pages or stretch to several pages? Should you include your martial status, age, unusual hobbies or just list relevant qualifications? Should you use colour in the titles?

But what all employers, professional CV writers, recruitment consultants, websites and books agree on is no matter how professional your CV looks, if you make grammatical errors it will go straight to the bottom of the pile. I guarantee potential employers will notice!

There is no excuse for bad spelling or grammar, especially in this day and age with the use of spell check.

Employers will perceive candidates that have CVs with incorrect spelling or grammar to be rather sloppy, lazy individuals.

Always check the dates of employment and education as the potential employer will check when gaining references and also try to minimise any "gaps" in employment. If you do have any gaps think of reasons for these gaps and include positives - perhaps you started a family, gained more training / education, travelled etc... Good positive things to include in your CV.

Do not be afraid to put relevant work experience first on your CV (even if this means it is not in chronological order) so potential employers can immediately see why a person is suitable. However, make sure that the rest of your work history remains in chronological order; with the most recent job first.

It is not only the detail on your CV that you need to spend time checking. Cover Letters should be correct too. Where possible address the Cover Letter to an individual and avoid "To Whom It May Concern". If the job advert does not specify a name phone and ask the company or check out the company website for more information.

Graduates or school leavers with limited work experience should write a covering letter explaining why they would be good for the job.

Your CV is a working document and should be updated regularly and adapted to target specific job roles or industries.

3 Vital Cover Letter Tips - Associated Content

Succeeding in today's job market requires you to make all of your applications perfect. Employers receive thousands of applicants for each position, and hiring managers do not have time to go over every single word  just to see if you make a good applicant. Cover letters are part of the application, which means that you need to adhere to the following cover letter tips in order to make sure your application is acceptable.

Cover Letter Tips

• Keep it Short

Cover letters should be limited to one page for all basic cover letters (cover letters for non-executive/management jobs). This is one of the most forgotten cover letter tips - many applicants like the idea of going on and on in order to convince the employer they make a great applicant, but hiring managers rarely read every word of the cover letter and that increased length is going to scare them away.

• Keep it Limited to Important Information

Young applicants tend to overvalue their life experiences. If you are applying for a job at Microsoft, the employer doesn't care that you worked at McDonalds or that you had a blog about how cool the Zune is. They care about relevant work experience that truly makes you qualified for the role. Make sure that everything you place in your cover letter is important to the job, not just important to you.

• Follow Standard Cover Letter Tips and Setup

There was once a day where playing around with cover letter style could get you noticed. However because there are so many thousands of applicants in today's economy, it is extremely difficult to get your cover letter to stand out. Instead, the best course of action is to follow standard cover letter setup exactly as it is described. Stand out with your resume and qualifications, not your cover letter.
