As I speak with IT project managers, IT program managers, and even PMO directors, I am amazed by how many think or know they do a great job but are unable to communicate it effectively. This is true with their resume, on their LinkedIn profile, in their cover letter, and in their face-to-face interviewing skills. Why is it such a struggle for PMs to talk about their successes?

Personal Branding for the IT Project Manager

The main reason that most PMs are unable to articulate why a company should hire them is that they lack a focused brand message. Wait! I know what you're probably thinking now. And, no, this doesn't need to be some highly complex process in which you need to do focus groups or polls to gain "customer insights." Creating a personal brand is relatively simple when approached with the proper mindset.

Think Business Value

What you want to do is consider how your actions as an IT project manager impact the business. Obviously, the specific projects that you lead are intended to benefit the company in some way. So you've got to describe those projects on your IT resume. However, the focus of the discussion is not the project itself or the technology solution deployed. The key element has to be about value.

What do I mean by value? Think benefit. If the company did not benefit in some way by the project you led, what was the point? Benefits come in many different forms, including:

So you want to connect the dots on your resume so that the reader can equate benefits like these directly to your involvement in a project.

How to Achieve Distinction

Listing these benefits is a great start, but they may be things that any project manager could have contributed to. Lots of project managers and program managers have the PMP certification. The real focus here should be on how you lead teams, transform projects, streamline project delivery, and get things done where others could not. Creating a PM Package

The final step is in creating a clear, consistent, and compelling message across all the job search forums. 12 Things Your Project Management Resume Needs in 2012

There is no denying that in 2012 the competition for a project manager's job is intense. If you've decided that this is the year your going to get into project management or upgrade your current job here are 12 suggestions that will help your resume leap of the desk ensuring you get the recruiter's attention.

1. Scannable first page

The first page of your resume needs be easy to read and scannable in 10 seconds or less. Use a slightly larger font size like 14 to draw the reader's attention to your achievements section.

2. Create an achievements section

Make sure your resume has a section on the front page that highlights the best bits from your career.

3. Boast a little

It's ok to boast about your work. You don't want to make up numbers of course but if your project made or saved your company money you need to mention the amount.

4. Be clear

Each sentence should be powerful and clear. Instead of "Worked on the ABC project", Say "I successfully ran the ABC project, saving CompanyX $2M annually".

5. Industry words

Project management has its own lexicon. Share your experience and knowledge about project management by dropping in some industry terminology.

6. Skip the obvious buzz words

Some people say you shouldn't use management buzz words at all. I think a few are ok, just don't over do it.

7. Certifications

Make sure you put any certifications on the first page. If you don't have any, start one! This way you can legitimately put one on your resume, don't lie just make a note mentioning the certification is "in progress".

8. Resume extensions

Employers often look at your LinkedIn site. Don't have a LinkedIn yet? you better get one! LinkedIn is an excellent way to build up professional connections. Recruiters also use LinkedIn to verify the jobs listed in your resume.

9. Keep references to social media out of your resume

Don't link your resume to sites like Blogger, Facebook or YouTube. You run the risk of a recruiter seeing you out partying with your mates.

10. Check the details

Make sure you check all the details of names, people and places. Nothing is more unprofessional than a poorly researched resume.

11. Keep it small

Keep your resume to four pages or less. No one wants to read a 100 page tomb of your life. Use only four pages to get your experience and skills short and concise.

High Court of Madhya Pradesh Information Technology On line application are invited for the recruitment of System Officers (Tentative 11 Post) and System Assistant (Tentative 89 Post) for the High Court and Subordinate Courts of Madhya Pradesh under e-Courts Project purely on Contract basis :

A. System Officers :
No of post : 11 posts,
Scale of Pay : Rs. 11500/- per month.
Essential Qualification & Experience : B.E. / B. Tech in Computer Science / Engineering or Information Technology / MCA with first class or minimum 60% marks in aggregate OR Master Degree in Computer Science / IT with first class or equivalent. Working experience on Linux, Open Office suit, PHP, SQL Server and programming in JAVA / C++, Web Designing, Server Administration & Network Trouble Shooting and Management.
Age Limit : Not exceeding 35 years for System Officer.

B. System Assistant :
No of post : 89 posts,
Scale of Pay : Rs. 7000/- per month.
Essential Qualification & Experience : B.Sc. (Computer Science or IT) / BCA (from a Government recognized University / Institution) with one Year working Experience. The Bachelor’s Degree and Post graduate Diploma should be first class or at least 60% marks in aggregate or equivalent grade. Working experience on Linux, Open Office suit, PHP, SQL Server and programming in JAVA / C++, Web Designing, Server Administration & Network Trouble Shooting and Management.
Age Limit : Not exceeding 35 years for System Assistant.

All eligible short listed candidates shall be required to appear in the written test and Interview on 14th June 2011. Candidates are required to bring their all Original mark sheets, Experience certificates at the time of written test /interview. List of all eligible short listed candidates shall be published on the website of the High Court i.e. www.mphighcourt.nic.in and the website www.mphc.in . Due to the incredible amount of project manager jobs being advertised out there, a trend amongst job seekers to simply mass distribute their CV and hope for the best. This could be called the shotgun approach.

Who would have thought a 100 year old technology could do all that!
