Making Your Resume Perfect for the Job You Want

A perfect resume is explanatory and detailed but concise and to the point. It should include only the pertinent information the employer will need, and should highlight the skills that would be most beneficial to the position being applied for.

All resumes should begin with the applicant's name and address plainly written at the top, perhaps centered and slightly larger than the other information given. This way, the employer can quickly spot this information, should he or she be attempting to contact you in for an interview. This area should include your name, address, telephone number, cell phone number, fax number, and email address. If there are other methods by which you can be reached as a professional, such as a voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) identifier used for business purposes, you may include this, as long as it does not take up too much space. You want this information to be easily and immediately accessible to the employer.

Be sure that you mention all of your skills and qualifications that are relevant to the position you are applying for. You want them to be displayed plainly so that the employer can see that you have what it takes to do the job they need doing. You should also be sure to include any and all education you have completed that is relevant to the job. If you have excelled academically, it is important to indicate that on the resume. Your education shows a potential employer that you have the drive and motivation to finish what you start, and that you are a dedicated and determined person who has the potential to be a top worker. Any potential employer will want you to bring these traits with you into their workplace.

If you have special natural skills that will help you do the job for which you are applying, you should mention these, as well. Employers like to know that their employees have a special talent they can utilize to the advantage of their business.

Although it sounds obvious, make sure that the references you use - personal and business - are the right numbers for the right people. People are constantly moving and changing email addresses. Confirm and double-check any and all information you publish on your resume. Anyone you choose as a reference should be notified ahead of time that they could possibly be getting a call from a potential employer. Try to avoid using personal references that will not be professional about the situation. Good and reliable references are necessary, so choose people who know your personality, true characteristics, and skills.
