Cover Letter Writing - The Basics

As a resume writing professional I am often asked about my opinion on the topic of cover letters. Let me start by saying that they are still needed. With that being said, here are some things to keep in mind when writing yours.

Keep in mind that the cover letter is your first form of communication with the hiring authority. Most people have a static resume that does not fluctuate depending on the opportunity they are bidding on, your introductory letter should be custom created depending on the actual opportunity you are applying for.

Address your letter to the appropriate hiring manage, recruiter or department manager listing their first name, last name and position.

In your cover letter, refer to the specific job title/ job id number that you are interested in. Comment on the service/ product offered by the company that you are applying to as well as the responsibilities of the position that you are applying for. Write about the way in which your past experiences have related to the organizations objectives and goals, and about the way in which you will be able to utilize your skills to perform your assigned duties.

Lastly, end the cover letter by thanking the hiring manager for taking the time to read your cover letter and resume and let them know that you'll follow up with them to confirm the receipt of your resume and to discuss the possibilities of moving forward in the hiring process.

By following these basic steps you should be in a position to have the hiring manager read your resume.
