Summer is coming up and you know what that means. Summer always increases business and you better get ready to make some summer staff hires. Summer always brings the parties, graduations, weddings and events. Not to worry, you still have time left to hire and train extra summer staff.
For starters, it is most effective to create a job description and a short training manual. This doesn't have to be too long; in fact, it can be pretty brief, just as long as it includes the important details and the duties and responsibilities the new hires will be taking on. You should also decide if you want someone with previous restaurant experience (if so, how many years of experience) or if you are OK with hiring someone who does not yet have restaurant experience but you feel may be a good fit for the position and someone who will be able to learn quickly.
It is also important to let your current staff know that no one is getting let go or replaced, you are hiring simply to add more staff to the busy summer season. This will make sure that your current staff does not feel threatened and as a result, start looking for another job.
Also, it is always best to hire a couple more employees then you think you need. A lot of things come up and there just always seems to be a shortage of employees. Also, some employees like go to away for a week or two in the summer.
It is also very important that once you make those summer hires, be sure not to treat them like temporary hires. You should take time to really train them and invest your time in them. They can potentially become a long term solution, or come back to help you out every summer. You don't just want to look for a quick fix or a band aid; you want a long term solution.
