There are certain tested and accepted trends in corporate sector and industry with respect to resume writing. When applying for a job, remember you may be asked to do other side tasks apart from the job for which you are applying. Present yourself in the best possible way, highlight your strengths and achievements and provide strong titles for yourself. Some of the tips pertaining to resume writing are discussed here.
Market Yourself: Presenting yourself in the best possible manner is not easy and is one of the toughest jobs. It is very difficult to convince others. There is always a tendency to be over-critical of yourself. Focus on all the achievements and strengths you have and present them in your resume so as to convince others of your talents. State your past accomplishments, recall where you were appreciated. Did you make an impact in your previous jobs? Discuss at length the skills you have and how you implemented them in your previous jobs. What sort of leadership and management qualities you possess. How good you are as a communicator, how well you blend with your co-workers. Remember, you know yourself the best. Its up to you to present yourself in the best possible way.
Active Verbs: Use action words to capture the attention of the HR department. All strong points in your resume should have the action verbs like Organized, Developed, Created, Activated, Constructed, and Orchestrated, so as to make your resume potent. These words affect the psyche of the reader and provide valuable points to your resume.
Presentation: Be consistent in your resume with regards to presentation. Spacing, Bolding of font, and information presentation should reflect consistency.
Grammatical Check: Your resume should be devoid of spelling mistakes, punctuation and grammatical errors. You should proof read your resume from someone who is good in grammar. A resume with spelling errors stinks and creates a very bad impression.
Tidiness and visual appeal: Your resume should look neat after printing. It should be printed on quality paper, cream (off white) or white. If you're sending it via Email, check its layout.
Resume Content: Ideal resume size is one page. However, if you feel there are important details that will give bite to your resume, you can make it a two page document.
Information:You can state information about yourself in a number of ways. Normally, the most recent experience is mentioned first i. e. in reverse chronological order. However, you can mention your work experience in the opposite manner also. Another aspect of your resume is your qualification. If you have less than five years of experience, state your educational qualifications and grades achieved in detail like year of graduation with result, awards you received, names of institutes where you studied, stipends and scholarships etc. If you have more than 5 years of experience, focus more on your work experience and just state your institute and year of graduation.
These are some tips which will enable you to make the job of resume writing easier. So brace up and apply.
