Three Surefire Steps to Write a Splendid Resume

Some candidates hire a skilled resume writer to design their resume while others shape up their own resume. People who are familiar with business writing usually succeed in forming a polished resume. But anyone can learn how to string together a successful resume through some guidance.

What differentiates an exceptional resume from just an average resume is:

1. Formatting and final presentation

The mediocre resume grabs the attention of the employer for a span of only a few seconds. It is immediately cast aside if it fails to leave a strong impact. Treat your resume with the same amount of care and consideration you will give an interview. Don't treat it with a casual approach.

Choose the right kind of format. If you have relevant experience, use a chronological format. This format begins with your current job and builds backwards. If you are new to the job market or reinventing your career by joining a new industry, use the functional/combinational form of resume. This means assembling your skills and attaching a short chronological work history in the end.

Other points that you need to consider include:

The removal of errors: Utilize the spell check tool and get your resume reviewed by someone for sentence structure and any other errors
Consistency: The format should be kept consistent and the use of capitalization and punctuation should be maintained throughout
Use of white spaces: Use white spaces to highlight core parts of the resume
Correct use of fonts: Don't use more than 2 fonts
Inclusion of important details: Enclose your name, address and contact details
The quality of printing: Use a laser printer and quality resume paper

2. Accomplishments and Responsibilities

Your accomplishments demonstrate how you managed to perform your responsibilities.

Accomplishments can just be the simple details of what a candidate continually achieved in the course of their job. Many of your common job activities can be specified as accomplishments.

While naming accomplishments, be sure to answer these questions:

Did you save company resources?
Did you improve the sales?
Were you productive and efficient?
Were you instrumental in implementing new systems?
Did you contribute to new products or services?
Did you solve a major issue with little resources?
Were you responsible for any technical/operational development?
Did you exceed expectations regarding quality?
Were you the author of original reports or studies?
Did you make a discovery regarding the need for a new program?
Were you part of any committees?
Did you solve customer issues?
Were you termed as outstanding?

2. Most common resume errors

The inclusion of some items is a complete no-no. These include:

The use of "I", "me" and "my" structures; Drop the pronoun to make it sound more appealing.
Use of words like "responsible for" and "duties included"
Use of unnecessary personal information; Remove your age, health, ethnicity and marital status
Use of photographs unless you are an actor/model
Use of unneeded reasons for unemployment periods
Extra documents such as certificates or work samples
Salary information
List of references

Fantabulous Resume Writing Tips to Get Splendid Results

There are certain tested and accepted trends in corporate sector and industry with respect to resume writing. When applying for a job, remember you may be asked to do other side tasks apart from the job for which you are applying. Present yourself in the best possible way, highlight your strengths and achievements and provide strong titles for yourself. Some of the tips pertaining to resume writing are discussed here.

Market Yourself: Presenting yourself in the best possible manner is not easy and is one of the toughest jobs. It is very difficult to convince others. There is always a tendency to be over-critical of yourself. Focus on all the achievements and strengths you have and present them in your resume so as to convince others of your talents. State your past accomplishments, recall where you were appreciated. Did you make an impact in your previous jobs? Discuss at length the skills you have and how you implemented them in your previous jobs. What sort of leadership and management qualities you possess. How good you are as a communicator, how well you blend with your co-workers. Remember, you know yourself the best. Its up to you to present yourself in the best possible way.

Active Verbs: Use action words to capture the attention of the HR department. All strong points in your resume should have the action verbs like Organized, Developed, Created, Activated, Constructed, and Orchestrated, so as to make your resume potent. These words affect the psyche of the reader and provide valuable points to your resume.

Presentation: Be consistent in your resume with regards to presentation. Spacing, Bolding of font, and information presentation should reflect consistency.

Grammatical Check: Your resume should be devoid of spelling mistakes, punctuation and grammatical errors. You should proof read your resume from someone who is good in grammar. A resume with spelling errors stinks and creates a very bad impression.

Tidiness and visual appeal: Your resume should look neat after printing. It should be printed on quality paper, cream (off white) or white. If you're sending it via Email, check its layout.

Resume Content: Ideal resume size is one page. However, if you feel there are important details that will give bite to your resume, you can make it a two page document.

Information:You can state information about yourself in a number of ways. Normally, the most recent experience is mentioned first i. e. in reverse chronological order. However, you can mention your work experience in the opposite manner also. Another aspect of your resume is your qualification. If you have less than five years of experience, state your educational qualifications and grades achieved in detail like year of graduation with result, awards you received, names of institutes where you studied, stipends and scholarships etc. If you have more than 5 years of experience, focus more on your work experience and just state your institute and year of graduation.

These are some tips which will enable you to make the job of resume writing easier. So brace up and apply.

Approach the Job Sphere With a Splendid Resume

The conditions of the job market in the 1990's were such that most organizations considered candidates not even meeting the required criteria sufficient because the number of candidates to choose from was not very large. Job seekers could get their desired job on their own terms and conditions and the employers were obliging.

The whole atmosphere of the job sphere has changed considerably since those times. The competition is so tough that many times, a job seeker's inability to market themselves properly and to highlight their strengths result into a never-ending struggle to find the right job.

Now-a-days, resumes which properly present accomplishments and significant capabilities are critical factors if a candidate is aiming to emerge as a winner. It is high time that the applicants reconsidered the basics. Employers don't settle for anything less than the very best. They have a wide group of candidates to choose from and are not obliging anymore.

A resume which leaves a strong impression is:

The connecting door between you and an interview

Your resume announces your qualifications, skills and accomplishments to the interviewer. You have to emerge successful from the interview.

The device that sets up the course of an interview

Interviews use your resume as a model to base their questions on.

After the completion of an interview, the recruiter has tools like your resume and their notes to help them remind of your worth as a potential employee. You can't decide the course of the interviewer's own notes, but what you do have the power to decide is the content of your resume. The resume may act as the last resort, so be cautious.

A factor that can help you make a solid impression

Usually, an organization only has your resume to assess your abilities. Your resume should market you as the most capable candidate.

A resume which fails to work is:

Your resume should emphasize your career objective, qualifications, skills, accomplishments and your potential contributions to the company. Your resume should not have a personal or casual tone and state unnecessary data like your date of birth, marital status and height etc.

If you were the person who designed your resume and didn't get it professionally reviewed, it's time to reconsider. If your resume is too basic, it might not cover essentials. Gathering past accomplishments in a striking fashion requires time and effort. Approaching your own accomplishments with objectivity is a key factor.

Resume writing doesn't follow any hard and fast rules. Many resume writing aids advise applicants to restrict the length of their resume to one page or necessarily use the chronological order. But these kinds of instructions won't work in your favor if all your qualifications, experiences and skills don't fit into one page or if the chronological order doesn't suit your details.

know how to use your resume as an effective tool.
