Sample Resume: Innovating an Application Document

Hiring managers' decision whether or not to consider an applicant for an interview only takes a couple of seconds, and is usually based on first impression. Having them read the first few lines of your resume could mean two things: 1) you caught their attention or 2) it is just a waste of precious time to continue reading. Wouldn't it be nice to be part of the first cut or nicer to be the only one left? An application document alone cannot get you a job-unless if it is obviously well-done, factual, and concise. If your application document is characterized by these descriptions, the next thing that you should do is to prepare for the sought-after interview. There are examples that you may use to create your own but there can be no better way but to have it "your way."

Why should you be hired?

A sample resume can help in crafting a document that will demonstrate that you are the best candidate. Remember that your edge as a potential employee will greatly depend on how flourishing your copy is. As an aspirant, you need a breakthrough in creating a contemporary application document. Here's how to do one:

- First Things First. Your header must have the important information (complete name, complete home address, contact numbers, and email address).

- Content Counts. No matter how good your contents are there will be no guarantee that the recruiter will take time to read all of it. The best way to wow your potential employer is through presentation. It is recommended to make use of readable font style (Times New Roman, Verdana, and Arial) and font size (10-12). Don't forget to leave an adequate space to make the document readable.

- Sum It Up. This may be the only section that hiring manager/recruiter reads fully, the "icing on your cake." Summarize your skills and accomplishments in a strong and convincing manner.

- Proofread. The only way for you to find out if you have done a satisfying sample resume is to read it. Once you are done reading, you can ask a friend or someone who is experienced for suggestion as to what should be added or omitted.

To effectively construct an eye catching example, thou shall not!!!

- Use words that are irrelevant or is applicable only to a specific position.

- Use vague objective description. Be specific. Phrase such as "looking for a challenging position" is already over used.

- Use unprofessional email address (for example, "Anne.tyler@domain.com" is way better than "antylr@domain.com").

- Include reason of previous employment termination for it may be asked or discussed during the interview. If a potential employer sets eyes on this particular detail, he may take it negatively and your application may be disregarded.

- Include misspellings, grammatical error and unnecessary punctuation marks.

Remember not to inflate or exaggerate information. Your sample resume must be the answer to the needs of job seekers who will make use of it as a guide in crafting their own application document. It should be well-written, innovative, and that can get better results.

Resume Format: PDF Not a Word Document

After you have spent many hours formatting your resume and making sure that it meets all the requirements for your industry as well making it look as pretty as possible for the end user; what is the mistake you are now most likely to make?

The answer is sending the document as a Word attachment. What could be so wrong with this you are wondering. Well there are multiple reasons why one shouldn't bother sending there resume as a Word file.

You need proprietary software in order to view it. What does this mean. Basically if you send your resume to a company or individual that doesn't use MS Word then they won't be reading. You would have to have the gift of god in your email to persuade them to spend $100+ just to read yours. The document doesn't look the same on every installation. This can be anything from default paper size to the exact version you are using. Basically you won't be able to tell if the people at the other end will be viewing the same information that you are, not something you want to be worrying about.Word document carry viruses. If you send someone a virus they are unlikely to be wanting to employ you.Microsoft have now turned a word processor into a slightly mangled document versioning system at the same time. What does this mean to you. Well it means that if you don't know what you are doing all previous edits of the document will be included in the one you send out. Do you want to get caught out with maybe literally a picture of your pants down your ankles?Word isn't, as the technical people put it, device independent. This means that the exact same set up, on a matching machine, can produce a different result. It can be down to having different model motherboards. You may think it can't be enough of a difference. But it can be enough to push one word onto a new sheet of paper and get your resume chucked straight in the bin.

So what is the answer?

Well it is fairly straight forward. Use a PDF. New versions of Word now come with PDF writers and for older ones they can be downloaded for free from the internet. Or embrace the world of open source software and use OpenOffice. It's free, fantastic, and I use it for all my document preparation needs.

The use of the PDF means that what you send is what they see. It is a great comforter to know that. Also people still think of PDF files as being highly professional, you will get more bonus points than you perhaps deserve, although that is no bad thing.
