Different Types of Cover Letters

Types of Cover Letters: A cover letter is an accompanying letter sent as an explanation, introduction, or record along with a resume or Curriculum Vitae. It can also be defined as a document sent enclosed with a resume or CV to provide additional information about an individual's skills and experiences when applying for a job. This letter expresses an applicant's interest in the job and describes why he is best for the position by relating his qualifications, skills and experiences to the job requirements. You must understand that you cannot send your resume in an envelope without an introduction; a cover letter is, therefore, a medium that introduces you to your prospective employer.

Cover letters can generally be divided into four major categories:

Cold-Contact Letters or Letter of Interest: Also known as an introductory or broadcast letter, this style is used when no advertisement has been placed by the organization for a specific job opening. An individual who is keen on working with the company sends this type of letter to the company to introduce himself and to state his interest. A cold contact letter is sent in hope of being considered for an interview, should any job opening arise.
Job-specific Letters or Application Letters: The most regular kind of letter, which is also called an ad-response letter, this style is used by applicants when a company calls for resumes to fill a vacant position. An advertisement is published, stating the position, profile, qualifications, skills and other requirements for the job opening. After matching his skills and qualifications with those mentioned in the ad, an applicant sends his resume with a letter, highlighting individual strengths that match those required.
Referral Letters or Networking Letter: This style of letter, which could be used in either the cold-contact or job-specific situation, highlights the name of a person who has referred you for the job. The individual providing the referral is usually an acquaintance of both the candidate and the employer. This kind of reference gives you an edge over other candidates in the race.
Follow-up Letters: This style of letter is usually sent when you do not hear a result from a company for a long time and the position is still not filled. This may sound idiotic, but it often does wonders. Therefore, sending a cover letter to thank the company for considering your resume and to ask for a result a few days before the interview is a great idea.

Though most cover letters are similar, they are written for very different situations. It is therefore necessary to decide on a specific type of cover letter for a specific situation.

Cover Letters - The Three Different Kinds

A cover letter is an important part of your job application package. The employer will not be able to tell from your resume what position you are applying for. A dynamically written cover letter will let the employer know what vacancy you are applying for and how you are suited to that position. There are three kinds of covering letters:

1. Direct response to an advertised vacancy. These vacancies can be advertised in print or online. The employer will state what kind of qualities, experience and skills they are looking for. When replying to these kind of adverts you need to offer what the employer is looking for.

2. Uninvited or cold calling letters. These are when you write to several companies that you are interested in working for. You let them know how your individual skills and experience could benefit their company. This is an effective way to apply for jobs as you may be offered an interview for a vacancy that has not yet been advertised. If there are no vacancies, you may have made such a great impression with your letter that when a vacancy does open up you will be contacted immediately. A further advantage is that the employer may refer you to another company where there is an opening.

3. Referral letters. These are where a friend, acquaintance or former colleague lets you know about a vacancy, possibly one that hasn't yet been advertised. If you are looking for a new job or career change let people around you know. You never know the contacts that others have. A referral letter gives you the edge over the other kinds of letter as the employer is more likely to ask you to an interview if you mention someone who works at the company (make sure this mutual person is a respected member of staff!)

With all cover letters, make sure you address it to the right person. Remember that this letter is a sales letter and you are the product. So make yourself sound as wonderful as you are.

Resumes - The Different Types and Styles

The Different Types of Resumes

Writing a resume can be such a daunting task that it may be difficult to even figure out where to begin or how to gather your thoughts enough to place them in an organized format on paper. Although most conventional resumes follow a basic format which always includes experience, skills and education, the way in which you can organize and categorize that data can greatly affect the influence your resume will have on potential hiring managers. This article will hopefully elucidate and clear up any concern over how to get started with your resume. The following are the various types of resume styles that cover most of what exists out there as far a resume styling is concerned.

1. Chronological Resume

Chronological resumes showcase your work history and more importantly highlight your historical experience in chronological order. All previous jobs/careers and work experience you've had gets listed chronologically with your current or most recent job listed first. Employers tend to prefer these types of resumes because they can easily see what types of work experiences you've had in the past without spending too much time trying to sift through the rest of your resume.

2. Functional Resume

The functional resume focus on your technical skills and experiences rather than your strict chronological work experiences. This type of resume is used mostly by people who are looking at changing careers or professional fields. This type of resume is also a good choice for those who have career gaps in their work history.

3. Combination Resume

Combination resumes focus mainly on your skills and experience. You should start out by providing a detailed list of all skill sets you have including all areas of the function you're applying to. For example if you are applying to an open project manager position, you'll want to make sure you include very specific skills involving project management principles, interpersonal communication and software knowledge.

4. Targeted Resume

Targeted resumes are very similar to functional resumes however here you are specifically highlighting the skills and experiences you have for the job you're applying for. In a functional resume, the skills you choose to include in the resume are much more broad than the specificity in a targeted resume. Targeted resumes without a doubt take much more time and effort to customize then the rest simply because they are different for each job that you apply for. These resumes are exceptionally effective when applying for jobs that you know you're highly qualified and have not only the skills but also any technical jargon that might be keywords for the hiring manager.

5. Mini Resume

The mini resume is simply a brief collection of your most important qualifications. It provides a quick and easy way to network with other prospective colleagues or even a prospective employer. This is not a full-length resume and should be used as a substitute, its purpose is simply to provide a quick reference and snapshot of who you are professionally.

These five different types of resumes should help you in your resume development. The main goal here is to always look for ways you can highlight your major accomplishments and show the hiring manager why you'd be a great asset to the company.
