5 Tips for Using the Right Keywords for Your Resume

In today's competitive job market, most companies use tracking systems to screen candidates for job openings. Software programs, internet job boards, and resume databases are the ones used most often. If your resume doesn't have the keywords that recruiting managers are looking for, it will most likely fall into the "no" pile, no matter how qualified for the job you may be. Here are some tips for matching the keywords in your resume to the jobs you want:

Match your keywords to the job description. First, search for the job you want on job search engines, such as Indeed, Monster, or CareerBuilder. For example, if the title of the job you want is "Social Media Manager," type these words into the search engine. Take a look at the job descriptions for each search result you come up with. Which specific words are used? Keep an eye on which certain skills are required, such as proficiency in WordPress and HTML. You want to use those same words in your resume. Some good keywords for the position of Social Media Manager are social media, marketing, sales, and project management. But since different job descriptions use different keywords, be sure to tailor your resume for each individual job.
Include your keywords at the very top of your resume. For instance, if your resume has a "Summary of Qualifications" near the top of the page, here's your chance to include all industry-specific keyword nouns and phrases. This ensures that your resume is found faster.
Talk to people in your industry about which ones to use. Go to the websites of the professional associations in your industry. Which keywords are being used in the content of these sites? Also, don't be afraid to ask colleagues, managers, and friends in your industry about what keywords would be of most use to you.
Consider your professional and educational achievements. Use keywords that describe your professional areas of expertise (i.e. web design, blogging, financial planning). Job titles and descriptions of your education (i.e. MBA) are also excellent keywords.
Keep an ear out for everyday jargon used in your industry. What words are professionals in your industry using most often? Putting these words in your resume will get you noticed. The Occupational Information Network, or ONetOnline.org, is also a good resource for finding descriptive words specific to your particular industry. Just do a search for a specific keyword and several job titles will come up in the results.

Prepare The Right Type Of Resume And Land In A Suitable Job

In the current economic scenario, recession and unemployment have become major problems and many people are suffering due to these problems. You may also find it difficult to land in a suitable job. The main problem is that there is stiff competition even for small jobs. If you follow these tips and prepare a good resume, you can brighten your chances of landing in a suitable employment. You should remember that companies receive hundreds of applications and they will have to choose a candidate from these applications. Only if your resume stands out, your dream of landing in a suitable job will become a reality.

- Your resume should be as organized as possible. You should gather all the details you want to give on your resume and keep them ready. You should then organize them in the right order. For example, if you are giving details of your qualifications and earlier employments, you should arrange them chronologically. The details should stimulate interests in the minds of the readers. You should not use the same format and template for all the employers. You should customize your resume to suit the expectations of the company for which you are sending your application. Talking to someone in the company or doing research about them will give you an idea as to what type of job you will be doing and what the company expects from you. You should take time to research and explore about the company so that you can customize your resume accordingly.

- Your resume should highlight your strengths and skills. The way you present them should show to the prospective employers that you are ready to put your skills to use. They should understand that you give importance to the action habit. In fact, the resume should also focus on what you like to do and what excites you. It is a known fact that if you have a passion or if you are excited about a particular job, the quality of your performance will be quite high.

- There should be enough information about your career objective also. Employers should understand how your career objective matches well with the nature of the job for which you are applying.

- Experts advise that you should write a summary at the beginning of your resume and this summary should briefly explain to the employers what you can offer to them.

- Nowadays, a cover letter is considered necessary for sending in a resume. You should customize your cover letter according to the company. The company may be expecting a few skills from candidates like you and hence, your cover letter should clearly say that you can easily meet their expectations. If you come out with compelling points in support of your claim, you are certain to be called for an interview.

You can not assume that these tips are common for everyone. These are only general guidelines. You should modify them according to your needs and customize them depending upon the companies for which you are sending your job applications.

All the Right Moves- The Right Body Language on a Job Interview

No matter how stunning your resume and cover letter are, if you don’t do well in the interview, you’re most likely not going to get the job. Being a little nervous is one thing, but showing up to an interview a completely different person than your resume says you are is quite another.

So how do you maintain the professional, capable, calm and collected person that you sold on paper? Brush up on your speaking and communication skills, maybe study some potential questions from employers… and then make sure that you convey the right message with your body language. I don’t mean to move seductively or try to hypnotize with your body by dancing on desks…. But you should be able to engage your interviewer, appear professional and most of all, exude lots of confidence to show what a shoe in you are for the job.

Here are a few don’ts to get you started:

Don’t cross your arms. This is a move that is often frowned upon in general- it’s even advised not to do this if you’re trying to pick up a guy or girl in a bar because it’s sort of a defensive move. You’re saying that you’re reserved and trying to remain closed off from the world when you are shielding your body like this. Of course you’re not trying to go home with your interviewer (that’s a different article) but if you appear closed off or standoffish, you’re not going to send a good message. Don’t even think about putting your hands in your pockets. Hello, five year old boy! Do you really think that someone is going to take you seriously when you pull this “shy” move? Keep your hands at your sides or casually on your lap! Don’t lean away. If you’re leaning toward the door or away from your interviewer, you may be unknowingly sending a message that says “I want to get away” or “I’m so not interested in what you have to say.” Common sense would tell you that these are not messages you want to send on a job interview. Leaning in a little towards your interviewer conveys interest and focus. Don’t touch yourself. Of course you’re not going to masturbate in front of the interviewer (well, I hope not) but you should also keep the touching of any part of yourself to a minimum. Keep your mind out of the gutter already, that’s not what I mean. If you touch your nose, it is kind of like a “tell” that says you’re not being completely truthful. Kind of ironic, considering Pinocchio’s tell was his nose growing every time he told a lie. Rubbing your head or neck says that you’re bored…. So does staring at the floor. It’s ok to scratch an itch, of course. Don’t sit there stiff as a board, either… just be mindful of what you’re doing. Don’t be a slouch or jitterbug. It’s ok to slouch back and relax when you’re at home on your couch, but in an interview? It appears totally unprofessional. Sit up straight, soldier. You are confident, not doubtful, remember? Also, if you cross your legs, it’s fine, but don’t start nervously shaking your leg or wiggling your foot. We all do this sometimes when our legs are crossed. It’s usually because we’re impatient or bored. You guessed it- not things that you want to say to on a job interview!

Now that you know what not to do on a job interview, it should be easier to avoid. Just remember that you want to be confident (but not cocky), professional and prove that you weren’t lying on that excellent resume of yours. Good luck and work that body language!

Finding the Right Job Openings for You

Job searching can be a difficult task that requires several hours a day. Job seekers may spend lots of time searching for jobs, applying for openings, filling out lengthy applications, creating cover letters, and following up with employers.

They may also take several days to revise their resume so that it's updated. Recommendations and referrals are another crucial step in the job process. If you don't have anyone attest to your work ethic and expertise, you may have a hard time getting a job offer.

If your job search is not moving on to the next level, there are a few things you can evaluate.

Your cover letter is the first an employer looks at, even before a resume. It's your best chance at making a good impression. If you aren't receiving any calls, it's time to revise the cover letter. Even if you don't have a lot of experience, this is your opportunity to shine.

The cover letter should be no longer than two to three paragraphs and should outline why you want the job, why you'd be great at the job, and a summary of your years of experience. It may be that your cover letter isn't long enough or doesn't divulge enough information.

After revising your cover letter, do a Google search for resume templates and upload some new ones, free of formatting. It's always a good idea to change up your resume if you haven't received any responses during your job search. Make sure all the appropriate key words related to your job are found in your resume.

After revising both the cover letter and resume, take a second look at your job search approach. Are you applying to several different jobs a day? Are you looking at other industries? Are you willing to change your salary requirements or possibly look at relocation?

It's important to remain flexible during your job search. You may need to consider things you previously would not have thought possible. For example if you are applying for nursing jobs in Raleigh, North Carolina, but you haven't gotten any interviews, it may be time to look at other cities.

Finding the right job opening involves tenacity and patience. Oftentimes the best jobs are buried beneath jobs that aren't legitimate or hundreds of jobs that don't match your skills. You'll spend a lot of time toggling search results so the best results float to the top.

Setting up job alerts on various job boards can give you a healthy advantage over the competition. You can set up alerts for keywords, jobs opening up in certain geographies, and job opportunities that match your skills.

Once you've gotten an alert, you should quickly apply to the job. The first resumes an employer receives remain fresh in his or her mind. He may even call you first if your resume pops up before the rest.

When searching for jobs, it's important to know your priorities. Do you value salary over benefits? Are you looking for a strong 401K option? Is the mission statement of the employer something you take very seriously? Are you interested in working with non-profits? All these questions should be asked along the way.

What's The Right Length For My Resume?

In my work as a Certified Professional Resume Writer (CPRW), the single biggest question I get from clients is: how long should my resume be, really? The Internet is filled with conflicting advice on this issue, so it's not surprising that jobseekers frequently feel insecure about it. After all, a resume that's too long will make a reader's eyes glaze over (not the best first impression). But on the other hand, a needlessly abbreviated document means less chances of a particular accomplishment nabbing a reader's interest...and more rejections. Is there a middle ground?

Here's one principle all jobseekers need to keep in mind when developing a resume (or hiring a professional to develop one for them): your resume needs to attract and sustain a reader's interest throughout its length. A 1-page resume can fail just as easily as a 2 or 3-page document if the language is weak and the structure cluttered. With that in mind, here are some general rules with regards to length that should work for you:

PROFESSIONAL LEVEL: Beginner or New Graduate
RECOMMENDATION: A 1-Page Resume

Don't feel the need to bulk up your resume if you don't have much of a work history: recruiters and hiring agents prize clarity and succinctness. Instead, identify those areas in which you particularly excel and:

-Develop a brief opening paragraph that focuses on SOFT SKILLS such as communication abilities, effectively managing multiple project demands, and negotiating agreements.

-If you've recently obtained a degree, then you should most probably include an "Education" section BEFORE getting into the work history.

-Keep the work history section limited to 2-3 lines (in paragraph form) describing unique responsibilities, followed by a "Key Accomplishments" section (if relevant) listing any successes you're particularly proud of.

PROFESSIONAL LEVEL: Experienced
RECOMMENDATION: A 2-Page Resume

If you've been working for 5 or more years, then a 2-page resume is probably your best bet. This length strikes the perfect balance between being concise and allowing your professional accomplishments to shine.

-Keep the opening paragraph as TARGETED as possible towards the kind of job you're seeking. Really highlight in-demand skills that are requested time and time again in job postings, and make sure they're expanded upon within the work history section.

-When listing accomplishments for particular jobs, it's important to use specific metrics wherever possible. This instantly increases the overall impact of the document and can make a significant difference in terms of the number of interviews you receive when submitting.

-Be sure to include any courses, training or certifications that might be pertinent at the tail end of the resume. You can change the "Education" section to read as "Education & Advanced Training" and insert them there.

PROFESSIONAL LEVEL: Expert
RECOMMENDATION: A 2 or 3-Page Resume

It's important for high-level professionals to realize that a resume should never attempt to encapsulate absolutely everything you've done. It should serve as a TEASER for your candidacy, highlighting just enough relevant accomplishments to pique a reader's interest and have them call you in for an interview. With that in mind, a 2-page resume is almost always the best solution UNLESS you have a body of work that can truly sustain interest for 3 pages.

-The opening paragraph needs to highlight leadership capabilities regardless of industry. If you've published in prestigious magazines or have master-level professional certifications, mention them here.

-Precise targeting is necessary within the work history section. Don't make the mistake of thinking all jobs deserve the same amount of space within the resume. Keep the focus tight on relevant jobs, particularly those held within the past 10-12 years.

I hope these suggestions prove helpful to you. Should you have specific questions about your job search documents, please don't hesitate to reach out!

Nothing Is Great Right Out of the Can, Proposal Resumes Included

There are many things that are accepted as truisms in proposals. One truism is there is always a pizza and coffee shop within one mile of where a proposal is being produced. Another is if your resume does not show it, you did not do it. The flip side of truisms is "falsisms." One big "falsism" in proposals is that resume preparation is quick and easy.

The ability to show what your people have done on similar programs is a huge contributing factor to the final outcome. Yet, quite often, younger writers are put on resumes because companies place a lower priority on them than they do on the technical section or executive summaries. However, to guarantee a winning outcome, the same attention to detail needs to go into shaping and presenting resumes as that which goes into other sections.

All resumes are initially incomplete. Never take a canned resume, and lightly pepper it with RFP requirements and jargon. Be creative! Tie the candidate's experience to the requirements while avoiding exaggerations and lies, be original with each resume, and always show the finished version to the author to preserve accuracy. Anything canned needs something fresh to make it exactly what you wanted. These seven steps of proposal resume preparation will help you sequence your activities correctly and get exactly what you need:
Select key personnel from a group including your team, your larger organization and your teammates' key personnel.Collect canned resumes.Develop a matrix for each person against RFP requirements to use when developing questions for the interviews and in the detailed template, if needed. A critical review might be necessary to identify potential compliance issues.Play the match-making game: Match experience to RFP requirements and make sure everything is covered. If it's not, find more people or replace a team member.Fit resumes into your required format, then polish them. Have each resume edited and checked by someone else and if possible, repeat this step as many times as needed.Include photos in the resumes, if you decided to add them.Abide by the broader proposal review schedule - Pink Team, Red Team, and Gold Team.

Remember these three things when writing resumes: focus on the customer, craft a creative and compelling story, and make it easy to evaluate. Doing this will help you create resumes that speak to the customer so they can easily see that your team has the experience to get the job done.
